From The Concrete
(2024 - Ongoing)
From the Concrete, (formerly Black Father Black Son), is a photographic project that explores the enduring bond between Black fathers, their children and the ways this relationship nurtures, resilience, identity and legacy. The work draws from community sites of memory and gathering, where Black stories are often buried beneath urban development or overlooked in mainstream narratives.
The title references Tupac Shakur’s metaphor of "the rose that grew from the concrete" and the reality of Black families building strength, love and possibility in environments that are not always designed to sustain them. Through intimate portraits and scenes, From the Concrete illuminates how Black fatherhood is an act of resistance and hope, cultivating beauty and light in spaces of struggle.
This body of work contributes to a visual archive that affirms Black presence and continuity, challenging stereotypes that have historically fractured or diminished representations of Black men and fathers. By centering their connection, the project speaks to both personal legacy and collective resilience, offering a counter-narrative rooted in care, growth and generational strength.
